What is a flu shot?

An influenza (flu) shot is a flu vaccine given with a needle, usually in the arm. Seasonal flu shots protect against the three or four influenza viruses that research suggests may be most common during the upcoming season.

How does a flu shot work?

Flu shots are a type of vaccine. Vaccines contain the same germs that cause the disease. However, they have been either killed or weakened to the point that they don’t make you sick. Some vaccines contain only a part of the disease germ.

A vaccine stimulates your immune system to produce antibodies, exactly like it would if you were exposed to the disease. After getting vaccinated, you develop immunity to that disease, without having to get the disease in the first place.

Who should get a flu shot?

(If inactive) Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season with a few exceptions.

(If live) If the individual receiving the shot is between the ages of 2 and 49 years of age

Who should not get a flu shot?

(If inactive) If you have a moderate or severe illness, you should wait until getting the vaccine. If you have previously had the following diseases or side effects you should not get a vaccine:

  • Had an allergic reaction after a previous dose of influenza vaccine, or has any severe, life-threatening allergies.
  • Has ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrome (also called GBS).

(If live) If you have a moderate or severe illness, you should wait until getting the vaccine. You should not get a vaccine if:

  • You are currently pregnant.
  • You had an allergic reaction after a previous dose of influenza vaccine, or have any severe, life-threatening allergies.
  • The child or adolescent 2 through 17 years of age is currently taking aspirin or aspirin-containing products.
  • You have a weakened immune system.
  • The child 2 through 4 years old has asthma or a history of wheezing in the past 12 months.
  • You have taken influenza antiviral medication in the previous 48 hours.
  • You care for severely immunocompromised persons who require a protected environment.
  • You have other underlying medical conditions that can put people at higher risk of serious flu complications (such as lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease, kidney or liver disorders, neurologic or neuromuscular or metabolic disorders).
  • You had Guillain-Barré Syndrome within 6 weeks after a previous dose of influenza vaccine.
