What is VAT in KSA?
Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in Saudi Arabia on January 1, 2018, at a rate of 5%. The rate was increased to 15% on July 1, 2020. VAT is an indirect tax imposed on the import and supply of goods and services at every stage of production and distribution.
Current VAT Rate
The current VAT rate in Saudi Arabia is 15%. This applies to most goods and services unless specifically exempt or zero-rated by the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA).
Calculating VAT from Gross Amount
To determine the net amount and VAT value from a gross total: Divide the gross amount by (1 + VAT rate). For example, with 15% VAT, divide by 1.15. Then subtract this result from the gross amount and round to obtain the VAT value. Formula: Net = Gross ÷ 1.15, VAT = Gross - Net
Calculating VAT on Net Amount
To calculate from a net amount, you have two options: (1) To get the gross amount including VAT, multiply the net amount by (1 + VAT rate), e.g., Net × 1.15 for 15% VAT. (2) To get only the VAT value, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate directly, e.g., Net × 0.15 for 15% VAT.
